 Okay, but since you have I thought of another word that annoys me. I understand that when typing it is easier and acceptable to use a smiley or type LOL. HOWEVER, when people say this out loud in a conversation I want to slap them "upside the head." This is particularly irksome when people say LOL but are not actually laughing (out loud). :x

I also find the use of "OMG" as a word horrendous.

"Like, OMG, I'm moist."
"That is soooo TMI."

I've always been irritated with the phrase "making love". Especially when it comes out of the mouth of someone who loves what's in your pants more than what's in your head. "Having sex", "fucking", or any variety of clever euphemisms work just fine.

Too many brilliantly beautiful ladies on this forum now . . .

Given that my career involves lecturing and writing with PROPER, academic English, the whole text-speak phenomenon drives me right bloody nuts. It takes alot to read an essay with such phrases in them and not want to knife someone in the throat. The worst part is that the students today don't even see anything wrong with it.

On a side note, being the cunning linguist that I am, I have no problem moistening thighs and savaging . . .

But love is certainly not something that you make, it's something that you have.

Well, at the moment with working two jobs, marking exams and assignments, keeping 1000 ass-hats from killing themselves, polishing up publications, arranging lecture notes and slideshows, and preparing for future conferences, I really only have time to properly attend to one beautiful lady in manner which she deserves.

If you can't give it your all, don't give at all.

So, yes, given that there are perhaps too many beautiful ladies here these days. Still, it has certainly helped to hold my attention. But if you're ever in Canada . . .

You may be a cunning linguist, but I am a master debater.

Perhaps, but I will remain content with my lingual abilities. I have a mistress to appease you know . . .

Granted, I too was a master debater during high school (competed at the provincial levels), which eventually led to my massive diction . . .

Am I the only one getting aroused by all of this banter?

I must concede that I spent most of my high school days masticating.

Like "tits," "breasts," or "boobs," I find different terms for the act of copulating conjure up different images in my mind.

I think of "having sex" as the boring, vanilla, routine, 2-minute missionary act that unhappily married couples do out of habit on a monthly basis. That or barn animals. It's just such a base physiological term that it doesn't really imply much is going on besides a two-pump chump and a bored woman who's going to have some fun with her Hitachi magic wand after hubby rolls over and falls asleep.

"Fucking," on the other hand, derives from similar Germanic cognates which often have a double meaning of "to strike." This brings to mind one person "banging" the ever-living moist out of another person. I see it as aggressive, passionate stuff, the bodice-ripper romance novel type of raw animal lust.

"Making love," then, seems to me to imply a certain degree of both skill and care. It sounds like a refined, delicate process, akin to the slow process of appreciating a cognac. It is a refined art, one that takes experience, astute observation, self-control, and natural intuition. I see a man who eats pussy like a lesbian and gently makes a woman melt with his fingers, employing all the bravado of a concert pianist.

I don't take issue with the use of the term "making love," but rather, with its misuse. Many men, who overestimate their own talents or simply wish to sugar-coat what their intentions are, will refer to "making love" when, far more often, they are actually referring to "fucking," or, even worse, "having sex."

 Yes, I have noticed this sort of misuse.

And that is why French will always be the language of romance, while German is the language of rough sex. Good times . . .

Tiefer, tiefer . . .

At this point I'd like to aim at Rammsteins song "Buck Dich". Which roughly means Bend Over.

Not really. In many languages (especially Indo-European ones) the historical idiom that underlies a verb's etymology is often quite concrete, and the idioms and verbs used relating to the copulative act, or just about any sexual act, are treated no differently. Moreover, verbs which may denote sexual acts can be used to emphasize qualities of quite other activity, and vice-versa. Just consider the famous Python "Nudge, nudge..." skit: "Is your wife a 'goer'?" In fact, the association of penetrative intercourse with striking is so bloody universal that it is hard to find a language where it doesn't appear (hell, we even have "knock boots"). Thus "making love" is in fact historically a euphemism or characterization of a squelching shared by rather more emotionally bonded and affectionate partners.

When it comes to "fuck", it is distinctly possible that the hypothetical Germanic root *pug is a variant of the more generally suggested Indo-European *bhug, and thus actually cognate with the Italic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuck

Imaginative, as well as concrete analogy and idiom so often appear and may supplant an older idiom or verb. Thus the Celtic cognate of an Indo-European verb shared with Greek, Slavic languages, and Sanskrit has disappeared in modern use - partly thanks to the prissifying of idiom to be "polite", such as is typical of Christianized countries, and partly because people just preferred the descriptive idiom. For example, in Irish one can refer to "bualadh craiceann", or "bualadh leathar", literally "beating/slapping skin/leather". A truly rollicking session of exploratory drilling might strike a gusher: "steall mé na ceathruin aisti" means, literally, "I poured the quarters out of her", which is to say got her to work up a decent sweat and splash out a rather noticeable quantity of liquid. Now, unlike Germanic languages, Slavic, or Italic-derived ones (I'm looking at you, French) where the same verb for getting nookie can also be used to describe messing someone or something up, in Irish this idiom has only recently crept into the language, and as a direct calque of English. "Ta sé focailte go léir", "Ta sé focailte in a cheann" ("He's totally fucked', "He's fucked in his head"), and, one of the best I've seen, in a comic back in the 70s and early 80s, "Colm agus a aingeal cuideachta" (Colm and His Guardian Angel) in the Sinn Féin paper "An Phoblacht" - "Cad sa phoc?" ("WTF?"; "poc" is Gaelic for a buck or small goat)
